The weather looked agreeable, so I booked the ferry over to the Island. No cars allowed, so it’s maintained a colonial charm complete with horse drawn carriages. The ferry ride was gifted with a flyover by the Thunderbirds, an Air Force fleet, who were in the area for another event. The island has a lot to offer for visitors. There’s a restored fort, which saw most of its action during the war of 1812 when the British attacked and took over the island. I also had lunch at the Grand Hotel, where the movie Somewhere in Time was filmed. It fits the name Grand, for sure, with the largest porch I’ve ever seen. Another highlight was the Butterfly House. Over 80 species to enjoy as they fly around and land on various flowers to collect the nectar. The only downside to these places is that the butterflies may breed, but don’t lay their eggs since their native habitat is missing. So after the butterflies die within a few weeks, the Butterfly House has to hatch new butterflies on a regular basis. They buy cocoons from Costa Rica to keep their house going.
