Hiking around the Nerja/Maro area

I've been on several hikes in and around Maro, the little village just east of Nerja and is famous for its caves.  Last Monday's hike was another glorious day and gave another slice of life in Andalucia.  Agriculture is a big industry in this part of Spain and ther are greenhouses all over growing crops of tomatos, peppers, eggplant, beans, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, and others.  Groves of avocado trees on terraces take advantage of the steep terrain.  This has been a good season for avocadoes and you can buy them in the market at 1 E for a kilo.  They're the best I've had and don't seem to go bad if you hang onto them past their due date.  Apparently the Spanish government is financing  farmers to switch over to mangoes because they can get more for them per kilo than avocadoes and they require less water for growth.

Lunch at a deserted hermitage

We passed by an abandoned quarry used when they were building the A-7 highway several decades ago.  Apparently, the workers were owed several month's back wages and abandoned all the equipment and blocked the road in and out of the quarry as a protest.  I guess  they never got paid.
