Shoutouts

I have give a shoutout to some websites and apps that have been indispensable during my travels.  What did we do before all these tools became available?  These are in any particular order:

Google maps - navigation has jumped by leaps and bounds. GM knows about train and bus schedules, platforms, walking distances between stations and much more.  Thankfully I have a Latvian SIM card that works all over Europe for the same monthly price--€25. The only limit is 2.5GB of data per month when outside of Latvia.  Can't beat those prices Verizon.

Tripit - is a cool app that keeps track of your travel details. When you get a booking confirmation you simply gorwRd it to plans@tripit.com and it populates your database with all the details, including addresses with links to Goofle maps. How handy and no more paperwork to lose track of. Of course, keeping ones phone charged is essential. I purchased a small battery pack that will keep my phone topped up all day.

Rome2rio.com works as an app and onl the web. It works similar to Google maps but has the added feature of giving you multiple travel options: to fly, take the train, bus and rough pricing, travel times and links to providers.  You can enter multiple destinations and zoom in on the details of any leg of your trip.

Booking.com is gets a bad rap at times but I haven't found a better  substitute.  We discovered it's headquartered in Amsterdam and I'm sorry I didn't see if they give tours. It would have been fun to see what goes on behind the scenes.   Books mg.com isn't perfect and I have to reset my filters all he time.  But it's fast and presents most ways of sorting by price, distance from where you want to be.  I question the reviews at times as being too high a rating based on my experience.  A 9.0 for a hostel is not the same as a 9.0 for a three-star hotel.  You have to compare apples to apples.
